Vor Biopharma is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished scientist to lead our Bioinformatics initiatives to build and sustain custom software in the Computational Biology group, apply computational tools to mine both public and proprietary databases, and utilize molecular, clinical, and genetic data to identify pathways relevant to HSCs and cancer and/or discover novel targets. The candidate will be responsible for managing a team and for establishing and maintaining the appropriate infrastructure to facilitate the acquisition and analysis of next generation sequencing such as whole genome, RNA-seq, and scRNA-seq data.

The ideal candidate will not only have significant experience with next-generation sequence analysis, but also multi-omics data analysis and integration, algorithm development, and clinical data analysis. Working closely with the research and development groups at Vor, this individual will provide bioinformatics and statistical support to the biology discovery and translational medicine research. The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Lead, develop, and manage a team of computational biologists.
  • End-to-end analysis that includes design, data gathering, processing, analysis, iteration with stakeholders and presentation of results.
  • Build scalable bioinformatics software and automated data processing pipelines.
  • Develop new bioinformatics approaches for analysis of large-scale genomics datasets and application development.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with various internal teams including, clinical, operations, research, and product development.
  • Promulgate approaches and build tools that preserve scientific rigor and quality.
  • Maintain an active external scientific presence.
  • Act as bioinformatics functional lead for Vor’s external scientific collaborators.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies including document preparation and presentations.

Education and required experience:

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, or a related field and a strong background and interest in data science, genomics and genetics and a good publication record.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage bioinformatics teams, provide technical leadership, perform translational research, and lead and contribute to cross functional projects.
  • ~ 10 years of experience in computational biology and bioinformatics focused on NGS applications including RNA-Seq, transcriptomics, single cell analysis, genome variation, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of NGS genomic data analysis and bioinformatics tools (BWA, SamTools, GATK, FreeBayes, MuTect, VarScan etc.) and current data formats (e.g. VCF, BAM/SAM); deep understanding of data QC metrics.
  • Proficiency in Linux environment, version control tools, and reproducible research practices.
  • Excellent communication skills , both written and oral.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience with databases and AWS compute environment and data products.
  • Experience with a Business Intelligence and Analytics Software, such as Tableau or Spotfire.
  • Proficient in programming in R, Python and bash scripting.
  • Proficient in a workflow management system, such as Snakemake or Nextflow.
  • Have a good understanding of the procedures involved in generating samples for NGSbased sequencing analyses.
  • Capable of querying public and proprietary databases to evaluate potential gene targets and identify genetic modifiers of disease.
  • Cell or gene therapy experience is desirable.

The successful candidate will contribute to the discovery of novel targets of Vor’s innovative pipeline. This will involve working within a team environment to execute experimental plans requiring skills in fundamental molecular biology, cellular engineering, hematopoietic stem cell, T cell and myeloid cell biology.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in fields such as biochemistry/molecular biology, immunology, cancer biology, bioengineering, or related discipline is required (title and compensation commensurate with experience)
  • Master’s Degree with 2+ years of laboratory experience in an industry setting industry preferred
  • ParticipateExperience with mammalian cell culture
  • Experience with ex vivo genetic manipulation of hematopoietic stem cell or primary T cells
  • Using gene editing tools (CRISPR, TALEN, or ZFN) and/or viral gene delivery

The successful candidate will lead projects aimed at developing in vivo animal models to understand the impact of cellular engineering on hematopoietic stem cell behaviors especially in the context of a paired immune therapy. The candidate will work across various preclinical research programs. This function will involve design and execution of experimental plans comprised of engineered human HSPC as well as tumor xenotransplantation using humanized mouse models. This is an exciting and interdisciplinary role for a highly qualified and motivated individual with great enthusiasm, attention to detail and a strong desire to create the next generation of gene and cell therapy medicine for patients.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Evaluate and optimize available state-of-the art humanized mouse models for human HSPC and tumor xenotransplantation
  • Design experiments for in vivo and ex vivo studies for relevant preclinical as well as exploratory research
  • Evaluate current and novel HSC transplantation and conditioning regimens in animal models
  • Coordinate in vitro and in vivo testing at external contract research organizations and with other collaborators, as needed
  • Design experiments, interpret data, and problem solve with a high level of independence and creativity to advance Vor’s hematopoietic stem cell therapy platform
  • Create presentations and update progress to senior management
  • Maintain clear, detailed laboratory notebook documentation, draft study protocols and scientific reports

Qualifications:

  • PhD is required in the field of hematology/oncology, HSC biology or related discipline with 3- 6 years of experience in postdoctoral training or in industry setting preferred
  • Deep understanding of & hands on experience with studying hematopoietic stem cell and/or leukemia biology required
  • Experience with immunodeficient xenotransplantation mouse models
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture (including HSPCs) and cell-based assays including but not limited to FACS, ELISA and hematopoietic lineage differentiation
  • Experience using molecular biology and gene editing tools; CRISPR, TALEN, or ZFN-based knowledge a plus
  • Strong ability to work in team-oriented setting
  • Excellent communication, organization, and technical writing skills
  • Prior experience mentoring or managing direct report(s) a plus
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in startup environment
  • High level of scientific rigor, energy and being passionate about brining therapies to patients
